- Do I need an airplane rating before getting a helicopter rating?
No. An airplane rating is not required.
- Do I have to pay for the entire course of training up front?
No. You can pay as you go or put money in your account as needed. All accounts are tracked online on our skyscheduler.
- How old you have to be?
You can start training at any age. However, you must be 16 to solo, 17 to obtain your private pilots license and 18 for you commercial license.
- Can I get a job flying off shore once I get my commercial rating?
- You must have a minimum of 150 hours total time with 50 hours in helicopters in order to get a helicopter commercial rating. Most starting helicopter jobs require a minimum of 1000 hours of helicopter time. One of the ways to get that time is to become an instructor and build time teaching others to fly helicopters.
- What is the average time frame to complete the program?
All of the training is one on one with you and the instructor. You make your on schedule. The fastest that we have heard of a person finishing the entire program from knowing nothing about aviation, to teaching others to fly helicopters is 10 months time.
- What is the job market like for helicopter pilots?
It is tough in every job market at this time. However, do to the age of the current group of helicopter pilots in the field (there is still a large group of Vietnam era pilots flying) there is expected to be a large turn over in the next few years.
- What is the pay like for helicopter pilots?
Base pay for pilots in the gulf starts at around $50,000 a year and goes up to over $100,000 depending on your length of service, experience and the types of helicopters you fly.
